Adult Acne, Causes and Treatment
A mixture of changing hormones, diet and lifestyle, increase in stress levels and genetics are all major factors that contribute to acne but don't panic, there's a way out of a breakout!
Revisit your Skincare Routine
As we age, our skin cells renew themselves at a slower pace making pores more susceptible to becoming clogged with oil and dead skin. Investing in a good cleanser with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) in your skincare routine is a good first step to combatting adult acne. It does not only help to unclog pores, but it also helps to speed cellular regeneration whilst brightening and evening out the skin’s tone and texture.
Once you’ve cleansed your skin, ensure you pat dry your skin (DO NOT RUB!) and apply your choice of toner. The Purifying Toner by Kōtia is packed with additional ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Vitamin C to aid in calming and hydrating your skin after a deep cleanse.
While your skin is drying, take a look in the mirror and analyse your breakout areas. Are they on your jaw? Forehead? Everywhere? Our face is actually a map of our insides.
Commonly, acne around the jawline is linked to your hormone levels, whilst, acne on the forehead is a representation of your gut health. If there’s anything to take away from this, it's that your skin may be telling you something more critical that’s happening from the inside.
On the topic of insides… let’s talk about treating acne from the inside out. Now, we're sure you’ve heard it a million times but - DRINK MORE WATER. Not only will it assist in your complexion, but you will also feel more energised and hydrated from top to toe. Another generic, yet extremely useful piece of personal advice, is to try cutting out/down processed foods and excess sugar. These tasty, yet sometimes harmful goodies can impact drastically on the production of acne as they can cause excess oil and inflammation in the skin.
One rule of thumb, buying skincare without using an SPF in the daytime is a waste of time and money. Period. Find a moisturiser with an SPF.
Kōtia’s Hydrating Day Cream with SPF 15+ is a great two-in-one product that ensures you are using an SPF every day. Pair that with the Regenerating Night Cream in the evening which helps to boost your anti-ageing properties as well as calm your adult acne while you sleep. Have you had your beauty sleep lately?
So, whether it's fluctuating hormones or dehydrated skin, remember the basics: Drink your water, stick to, or find a skincare routine that suits you and find like-minded, online support groups who can help you get through this skin hurdle!
